Hi, friends. To be honest, I didn’t pursue new Christian music for a long time because I felt that a lot of what I’d heard had this over-produced-to-the-point-of-dull sound. I hope my bluntness doesn’t offend any Christian music fans; this is just my personal two cents.
The lowest-common-denominator, this-could-play-in-a-grocery-store sound always turned me off. I wanted to see what was out there nowadays, so as a longtime Spotify user, I finally started using the app to discover Christian songs a few months ago. Fast forward to now, and my Christian playlist is my favorite one.
I don’t know if Christian music has diversified in the last ten years or if Christian music I would like has always existed; either way, music streaming services have made it easier than ever to find new music.
I definitely have “mainstream Christian” bands and musicians that I love–Matthew West, Casting Crowns, Michael W. Smith, etc.–and other Christian music sharing posts will follow this one. However, it’s been awesome finding music that “sounds like secular music” yet has uplifting, life-affirming messages.
Two notes before I get into the list–#1, all these songs are upbeat because I am a crybaby, so I don’t usually go out of the way seeking super slow and emotional worship music. [Yes, I cherish some slow and emotional ones, but have you tried driving and profusely wiping away tears simultaneously? Not very safe!] #2, I restricted the list to songs with videos that came out in 2018 (so I could narrow it down, haha).
Pop/EDM (Electronic Dance Music)
You’re rewriting my story
And I’m brand new like a morning
Oh, I never knew anything lasts forever
Till I found You
Till I, till I found You
Oh, hear my prayer tonight, I’m singing to the sky
Give me strength to raise my voice, let me testify
Oh, hear my prayer tonight, ’cause this is do or die
The time has come to make a choice
And I choose joy
Let it move you, let it move you, let it move you
Yeah, I choose joy
Let it move you, let it move, let it move you
So I let go and I let love
Show me life like it’s supposed to be
An oasis here awaits us
All the freedom I’ll ever need
Now I’m alive
Oh-la-la, oh-la-la
When I let go then I found life
Do You mind if I sit right here?
‘Cause when I’m with You, there is one thing that’s clear
All this white noise in my head dies down
‘Cause Your love drives out my fear
Rap/Hip-Hop
I need You to fight for me
When I don’t know what I believe
Why does everybody leave?
Show me what it’s like to dream
If I ever took a loss, I learned a lesson
I won’t ever think I’m better than the next man
I’ve been down before the come up, I ain’t stressin’
Baby, I’m too busy countin’ all these blessings, blessings
I need You, oh Lord
Miscellaneous
All at once I came alive
This beating heart, these open eyes
The grave let go
The darkness should have known
(You’re still rolling rolling, you’re still rolling rolling oh)
You’re still rolling stones
Won’t He do it?
He said He would
Fight your battles for you
They gon’ wonder how you sleep at night
Won’t He do it?
Ah yes, He will
Anybody tell you something different
You know that’s a lie
You gon’ look back and be so amazed
How it turned out
It’s only His grace
Won’t He do it?
He said He would
So, I trust Him at all times
I’ve cried many rivers
I’ve walked through some pain
I’ve seen my world crumble
And I’ve carried the shame
But I know somebody, He calls me His own
I can hear heaven singing out
Oh-oh-oh, you’re never alone
Thanks for reading! Do you like any of these songs?
My favorite on this list right now is “Won’t He Do It.” It’s so catchy and sassy! “I Need You” is also cool with its dancehall/trap blend. The artist is Nigerian, and he’s so obscure that I can’t find his lyrics on Google.
Feel free to leave suggestions, especially if you have some for Christian Rock.
